Ankara, Turkey, March 13 – Commemorative events for the 111th anniversary of the Çanakkale Naval Victory and March 18 Martyrs’ Remembrance Day, collectively known as “Victory Week,” have commenced with a ceremony held at Çimenlik Castle in Çanakkale. This significant event took place at the very castle where the TCG Nusret, a modern-day representation of the Nusret Mine Ship, is anchored. The original Nusret Mine Ship played a pivotal role in altering the course of the war by deploying mines in the Bosphorus on the night connecting March 7 to March 8.

Official Commencement and Distinguished Guests

The ceremony was attended by Çanakkale Governor Ömer Toraman, other provincial protocol officials, and a significant number of citizens. The event began with traditional Ottoman Janissary band marches (mehter marşları) and folk dances, setting a solemn yet celebratory tone for the week-long commemorations.

The Journey of Sacred Relics to the Capital

A key moment of the ceremony involved the handover of sacred relics, notably a Turkish flag, to a group of athletes. These athletes have been entrusted with the important task of transporting these relics from Çanakkale to Ankara. The culmination of this journey will be on March 18, when the relics will be formally presented to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during a special ceremony in the capital.

The “Victory Week” events serve as a poignant reminder of the heroic stand at Çanakkale, a pivotal moment in Turkish history. The transfer of these sacred items to Ankara underscores the national significance of the victory and the enduring respect for those who sacrificed their lives.

Historical Significance of Çanakkale Naval Victory

The Çanakkale Naval Victory, also known as the Gallipoli Campaign, was a crucial battle during World War I. The Ottoman Empire successfully repelled an Allied invasion, preventing them from gaining control of the Dardanelles Strait and subsequently Istanbul. The Nusret Mine Ship’s actions in particular were instrumental in the outcome, sinking several Allied warships and disrupting their naval operations.

The annual commemorations not only honor the martyrs but also reinforce national unity and pride. The participation of citizens alongside officials highlights the deep-seated reverence for this historical event across Turkey.

Future Events and National Observance

The presentation to President Erdoğan on March 18 will be a central event of the national observance, bringing the Çanakkale spirit to the heart of the nation’s capital. Further details regarding the Ankara ceremony are expected to be released closer to the date.

The “Victory Week” is a period of reflection and remembrance, ensuring that the sacrifices made during the Çanakkale Naval Victory are never forgotten and continue to inspire future generations.
