Sergen Yalçın: Beşiktaş Has Plans and Goals, Needs Time

ISTANBUL – Following Beşiktaş’s 2-1 triumph over Fenerbahçe in their first Turkish Cup Group C match, head coach Sergen Yalçın addressed the media in a post-match press conference. Yalçın highlighted the quality of the game, stating, “First of all, let’s talk about the game; I think it was a beautiful game befitting two major clubs. Both teams did their best. It was good that we scored the final goal. We started with high-pressing. Our players did this very well throughout the game. Our starting squad was very good. Both the team and individual talents were at the level we expected. I think we deserved to win. We ended the year’s last derby with a morale-boosting victory and will start the next half well.”

Transfer Window and Player Selection

Yalçın also shared his thoughts on the upcoming transfer window, noting the team’s current physical condition. “Considering our last match, we can say that we are in good physical condition. We played with high-pressing against the strongest team in the league. This was important for us. We adhered to the game plan. Regarding transfers, we are working. The January transfer window is difficult. You have to spend good money. We are working closely with the scout team. We are doing a lot within the plan. Time will tell how much we can implement. We are not looking at young players. We are looking for players who can perform directly for us. This will, of course, start at the beginning of the month. We will see how far we can go,” he explained.

The Importance of Time in Football

The 53-year-old coach emphasized the need for time to build his team, stating, “Let me put it this way, we see this every week in our game plan. Some players change positions during the game. This is part of our planning. This is our plan. It was like this in previous matches as well. We start Cerny in the center and then move him to the wing. The same goes for our other players. These changes are very normal in football. This shows that our players are versatile. These are the right players for the plan. When you do the right things and they reflect the directives correctly, they stick to the plan. We play 1-on-1 on the field, which is very difficult. If we can do this, we can do even better. We see that our team’s motivation is increasing. We could have finished 8-10 points higher very easily. That’s why there are lost points. We are trying to build something new. Our only fear is not being given time. In big clubs, the issue of time is difficult. We are trying to give hope to our fans and the club. We have plans, we have goals. But for this, we need time. Everything is slowly. Football is a live game. We cannot solve this in 1 or 2 months. If things go well, we believe we will solve these problems in the coming period.”
