Simultaneous Raid on Illegal Gambling Dens in Ankara: 29 Detained

Ankara, April 8 – In a significant operation targeting illegal gambling activities, Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office, in collaboration with the Public Order Branch Directorate’s Anti-Gambling Bureau, conducted simultaneous raids on establishments operating as ‘casinos’ in the Altındağ district. The operation resulted in the detention of 29 suspects out of 39 individuals for whom arrest warrants had been issued.

Investigation Initiated on Tip-off

The General Investigation Bureau of the Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation following a tip-off that certain businesses in Altındağ were continuously facilitating gambling. It was reported that business owners were earning illicit profits by taking a 10% commission, known as ‘ganyota,’ from every gambling table.

Technical and Physical Surveillance Reveals Sophisticated Alarm System

During the technical and physical surveillance conducted by the Public Order Branch Directorate’s Anti-Gambling Bureau, it was discovered that individuals referred to as ‘erkete’ were stationed at the entrances of these establishments. These individuals were equipped with remote controls to activate an alarm system, warning those inside of approaching police teams. This allowed the concealment of money, ashtrays, and ‘papers’ used for record-keeping before authorities could gain entry.

Large Sums of Turkish Lira and Foreign Currency Seized

The simultaneous operations, executed at 9 businesses across 8 different addresses, led to the apprehension of 29 suspects wanted for the crime of ‘providing a place and opportunity for gambling.’ During searches at these locations, substantial amounts of Turkish Lira, Euros, Dollars, and Sterling, along with quarter gold coins, were confiscated, identified as proceeds from the illegal activities.

Efforts to apprehend the remaining fugitive suspects are ongoing, as authorities continue their work to dismantle illegal gambling networks in the region. This operation underscores Ankara’s commitment to combating organized crime and ensuring public order.
