Ankara, Turkey, December 13 – Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı announced that support mechanisms will be developed to integrate Angora wool into the economy as a high-value product. Yumaklı emphasized ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Technology to provide special support for Angora wool production.

Ankara’s Dominance in Angora Goat Production

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Yumaklı highlighted that the Angora goat is a species unique to Ankara, with 78 percent of Turkey’s Angora goat production taking place in the capital. He confirmed that efforts to protect and develop this special species are continuing. Yumaklı also noted that Angora wool has been included within the scope of contracted production through legal regulations published in the Official Gazette.

The Minister underscored the support provided by his ministry to enhance both the production and the quality and yield characteristics of Angora goats. “The production carried out by our producers in Ankara will have a very significant impact in this regard in Turkey,” he stated.

Yumaklı revealed that the support provided in this area has been increased by up to twofold compared to last year. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to standing by producers and overseeing all their activities.

Angora Wool: A Significant Potential Area

Yumaklı pointed out the global preference for textile products made from Angora wool, elaborating, “We see Angora wool as a serious potential area that needs further development. At the same time, its industry also needs to be developed so that it becomes a high-value product for the economy. We have ongoing work in this regard. We are working and will continue to work with our Ministry of Industry and Technology to specifically support this type of production. We aim to have a say in this matter, and we will achieve it, God willing.”

He described contracted production as indispensable for agricultural production, stating that efforts are being made to develop it across all categories, not just for a single product.

Production Planning and Contracted Production

Yumaklı recalled that production planning for animal and plant products and aquaculture was implemented last year, with the primary objective being the development of contracted production.

Addressing Challenges in Contracted Production

Acknowledging certain issues with contracted production, Yumaklı mentioned complaints regarding the impracticality of existing contracts for both producers and buyers. He confirmed that these complaints are being analyzed individually.

“We have created standard contracts. We have ensured that a copy of these contracts comes to the Ministry, as we wanted to digitize them and eliminate paper and bureaucratic procedures. As the Ministry, we have also started monitoring these contracts,” Yumaklı explained.

He further stated that an arbitration institution has been established to resolve disputes between buyers and sellers. “We have ensured that disputes are resolved very quickly, within a period of 1-2 weeks. Here, it is important for the producer to earn income based on the results of the contract they have made, rather than the market trends or sales guarantee of the product. It is also important to ensure the raw material guarantee for those who will supply and convert it into a product. Therefore, we will continue to develop this in all aspects related to contracted production and ensure the expansion of its scope.”
