In 2021, Taraklı received international acclaim, being honored by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as part of its ‘Best Tourism Rural Settlements and Villages Initiative’. This award highlights the district’s commitment to preserving its unique cultural and architectural heritage.
The Enduring Legacy of Taraklı Houses
Alaattin Yılmaz, a local expert, shed light on the historical houses, stating, “Taraklı houses are built according to civil, Turkish, and Ottoman architecture, and each mansion has its own story.” He explained the functional design of these three-story homes: “If the houses are three-story, the lady of the house performs daily chores on the ground floor, which features small windows to maintain privacy. The second floor is used for winter, and the third floor for summer.”
Yılmaz also drew a fascinating connection to another well-known historical town: “Safranbolu houses are similar to Taraklı houses. The reason is that the founders of Safranbolu were from Taraklı. The old name of Safranbolu was Medine-i Taraklıborlu. Sometimes people visit Taraklı to find their roots.” He emphasized the longevity of these structures, noting, “These houses here are 150-200 years old, and some are even 300 years old. The characteristic of wooden houses is that they can be passed down from generation to generation if restored, while concrete houses typically last only 50-100 years.”

Taraklı’s historical houses and preserved ambiance continue to make a significant contribution to Sakarya’s tourism potential.
