ANKARA, Turkey – The Turkish Ministry of Trade has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumer rights and interests through continuous and resolute market surveillance and inspection activities across the country. The Ministry’s statement comes amidst intensified efforts to combat unfair price increases in the retail sector, particularly in the food supply chain.
Ministry Uncovers Significant Price Discrepancies in Istanbul
As part of its ongoing market surveillance and inspection efforts, the Ministry of Trade conducted a detailed investigation into price movements along the supply chain for cherry tomatoes, Çengelköy cucumbers, and red peppers at a supermarket chain operating in Istanbul. The examination utilized the Produce Registration System (Hal Kayıt Sistemi) to track pricing from production to consumer.
The investigation revealed substantial markups. For cherry tomatoes, a trader operating in Istanbul purchased the product from a commission agent at Antalya Kumluca Market for 50 Turkish Liras (TL). The same trader then sold these tomatoes to the supermarket chain for 110 TL, which subsequently retailed them to consumers for 250 TL.
Similar discrepancies were found with Çengelköy cucumbers. A commission agent in Istanbul sold these to the supermarket chain for 60 TL, which then offered them to consumers for 135 TL.
For red peppers, a commission agent at Antalya Kumluca Market sold the product to an Istanbul-based trader for 70 TL. This trader then sold them to the supermarket chain for 100 TL, with the supermarket ultimately selling them to consumers for 225 TL.
Administrative Sanctions to Be Applied for Unfair Pricing
Following these evaluations, the Ministry concluded that the named companies had engaged in unfair price increases. Consequently, the matter has been referred to the Ministry of Trade’s Unfair Price Evaluation Board for the implementation of necessary administrative sanctions.
In its official statement, the Ministry emphasized, “As the Ministry of Trade, we continue to closely monitor price movements at all stages from production to consumption, ensure fair, transparent, and balanced price formation in the markets, and resolutely maintain our market surveillance and inspection activities nationwide to protect the rights and interests of our consumers. Our fight against opportunism and unfair price increases will continue without compromise.”
This proactive stance underscores the government’s determination to maintain market stability and safeguard consumers from exploitative pricing practices.
