Ankara, February 20 – Teams from the Turkish Ministry of Trade are carrying out extensive inspections of markets and chain stores in Ankara. These efforts are primarily focused on essential food items and consumer products, aiming to curb potential unfair price increases, stockpiling, and issues related to price tags.

Ministry Intensifies Inspections During Ramadan

The Ministry of Trade has intensified its oversight in response to the Ramadan period, a time when consumer demand for basic food and consumption products typically increases. The objective is to proactively prevent any instances of price gouging, artificial scarcity through stockpiling, or misleading price labeling that could disadvantage consumers.

Focus on Price Tags and Stock Levels

During these inspections, teams from the Provincial Directorate of Trade meticulously examine price tags, as well as the stock levels of products both in storage and on shelves. The comprehensive checks are designed to ensure compliance with pricing regulations and fair trade practices.

Elif Tan, the Provincial Director of Trade, confirmed that these inspections are being conducted simultaneously across all 81 provinces of Turkey. “In line with our Ministry’s directives, we are rigorously continuing our inspections in local and national chain markets before and during Ramadan. Our focus is on basic food and consumer products to prevent unfair price increases and ensure adherence to price tag regulations,” Tan stated.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

In cases where irregularities are detected by the Provincial Directorate of Trade teams, a formal record is made, and the findings are forwarded to the Unfair Price Assessment Board. Following the board’s final decision, administrative sanctions are imposed. For each violation, an administrative fine of 3,973 Turkish Liras is issued.

These ongoing inspections underscore the government’s commitment to protecting consumers from exploitative practices and ensuring market stability, especially during periods of heightened demand. The widespread nature of the inspections across the country highlights a concerted effort to maintain fair pricing and prevent market manipulation. The Ministry of Trade aims to create a transparent and equitable trading environment for all citizens, ensuring that essential goods remain accessible and affordable.

The proactive measures taken by the Ministry are crucial in building consumer trust and fostering a healthy competitive market. By addressing potential issues such as price inflation and product hoarding, the government seeks to safeguard the economic well-being of its citizens and ensure a fair marketplace for everyone.
