The Zero Waste Forum, an international event focusing on energy efficiency and resource management, is scheduled to take place in Istanbul from June 5-7. The forum, held under the auspices of Emine Erdoğan, President of the United Nations Zero Waste High-Level Personalities Advisory Board and Honorary President of the Zero Waste Foundation, will gather government representatives, ministers, mayors, businesses, academics, and NGOs from around the world.

High-Level Ministerial Session on Energy Efficiency

A key highlight of the forum will be the High-Level Session of Energy and Natural Resources Ministers, hosted by Alparslan Bayraktar, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. This session will delve into critical topics such as energy efficiency, renewable energy investments, circular economy practices, integration of waste into energy processes, resource efficiency, and energy security.

Minister Bayraktar emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “We are hosting a global summit in Istanbul to protect our common home, the world. At the Zero Waste Forum, participants at ministerial level, international decision-makers, and sector representatives will come together. Through the high-level session on ‘Energy Efficiency and Resource Management for a Sustainable Future’ held on the sidelines of the forum, we will collectively shape concrete solutions for increasing energy efficiency and transitioning to clean energy.”

“Roadmap for a Sustainable Future”

Samed Ağırbaş, President of the Zero Waste Foundation and COP31 High-Level Climate Champion, highlighted the inseparable link between energy efficiency and zero waste. “Energy efficiency and zero waste are two inseparable topics. A roadmap will emerge at the Zero Waste Forum, which we, as the Zero Waste Foundation, will hold from June 5-7 under the auspices and leadership of Ms. Emine Erdoğan. We want to make Istanbul a global center for zero waste and energy efficiency,” Ağırbaş stated.

The forum, themed ‘The Road to Antalya: Zero Waste as Climate Action,’ aims to facilitate discussions and collaborations that will contribute to global efforts in climate action and sustainable development. The gathering of diverse stakeholders is expected to foster innovative solutions and policy recommendations for a more sustainable future.

The event underscores Turkey’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its role in promoting international cooperation on critical issues such as waste management and energy transition. The outcomes of the forum are anticipated to provide valuable insights and a clear direction for future initiatives in the zero waste movement.

The comprehensive agenda includes a series of panels, workshops, and bilateral meetings designed to encourage knowledge exchange and partnership building among participants. The focus on practical applications and actionable strategies is expected to yield tangible results that can be implemented at local, national, and international levels.

Istanbul, as the host city, will serve as a vibrant backdrop for these important discussions, bringing together global expertise to address some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. The forum is set to be a significant step towards achieving the goals of the zero waste initiative and advancing the global sustainability agenda.

The event’s emphasis on integrating waste into energy processes highlights the potential for innovative solutions that not only reduce waste but also contribute to energy security and the development of renewable energy sources. This holistic approach is crucial for building resilient and sustainable systems.

The participation of a wide range of stakeholders, including government officials, industry leaders, and civil society organizations, reflects the collaborative spirit of the forum. This multi-sectoral engagement is essential for driving systemic change and ensuring the successful implementation of zero waste principles across various domains.

The Zero Waste Forum is poised to be a pivotal event in the global sustainability calendar, offering a platform for dialogue, innovation, and collective action. Its focus on practical solutions and high-level engagement is expected to generate significant momentum for the zero waste movement and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.
