Trade Ministry Intensifies Market Inspections in Ankara Ahead of Ramadan

Ankara, February 20 – The Turkish Ministry of Trade has intensified its market inspections across Ankara, targeting basic food and consumer products. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to combat exorbitant price increases, stock hoarding, and price label discrepancies, particularly in the lead-up to and during the holy month of Ramadan.

Teams from the Ministry of Trade are actively monitoring chain markets in the capital, meticulously examining price labels and inspecting products on shelves and in stock. The inspections are being carried out by the Provincial Directorate of Trade teams.

Strict Measures Against Unfair Practices

Provincial Trade Director Elif Tan stated that these inspections are taking place simultaneously in all 81 provinces of Turkey. “In line with our Ministry’s instructions, we are intensely continuing our inspections in local and national chain markets, especially for basic food and consumer products, to prevent unfair price increases and ensure compliance with price label regulations, both before and during Ramadan,” Tan explained.

Should any irregularities be detected during these inspections, a report is filed and forwarded to the Unfair Price Evaluation Board. The Board’s final decision can result in administrative sanctions and a fine of 3,973 TL for each violation.

Protecting Consumers During Ramadan

The Ministry’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to consumer protection and market stability. With Ramadan approaching, there is often a heightened demand for certain goods, which can sometimes lead to opportunistic pricing practices. These comprehensive inspections aim to curb such activities and ensure that essential goods remain accessible and affordable for all citizens.

The focus on price labels is particularly crucial, as misleading or incorrect labeling can cause significant inconvenience and financial disadvantage to consumers. By scrutinizing both shelf prices and stock levels, the Ministry aims to create a transparent and fair marketplace.

Nationwide Effort to Ensure Fair Trade

The synchronized nature of these inspections across all 81 provinces highlights a nationwide commitment from the Ministry of Trade to uphold fair trade practices. This coordinated effort is designed to send a clear message to retailers that price manipulation and stock hoarding will not be tolerated, especially during periods of increased consumer vulnerability.

The ongoing market surveillance is a critical component of the government’s strategy to manage inflation and protect household budgets. By actively intervening in the market, the Ministry of Trade seeks to maintain economic stability and ensure that consumers are not unfairly burdened by rising costs of living.

These robust inspection activities are expected to continue throughout the Ramadan period, providing a continuous deterrent against any attempts to exploit market conditions. The Ministry encourages citizens to report any instances of unfair pricing or suspicious practices they encounter to help support these ongoing efforts.
