Istanbul, April 15 – The historic Balıklı Greek Hospital in Zeytinburnu, which suffered extensive damage in a fire on August 4, 2022, has been meticulously restored and brought back into service. The restoration was carried out within the scope of the ‘Yadigar’ project, preserving the structure’s original identity.
Restoration Efforts Led by Collaborative Partnership
The restoration process was a joint effort, spearheaded by the Istanbul Governorship’s Investment Monitoring and Coordination Presidency, the Zeytinburnu Municipality, and the Balıklı Greek Foundation. This collaborative approach ensured that the project adhered to historical preservation standards while addressing the significant damage incurred.
The hospital, originally known as the ‘Yedikule Hospital’, was built in 1753 by the grocers’ guild. It initially served as a small wooden building in the area where the European High School now stands. During that era, it played a crucial role in providing medical care to citizens affected by frequent plague epidemics.
Extensive Renovation to Address Fire Damage
The restoration work involved a comprehensive renovation of the severely damaged parts of the building. The completely burned roof and the damaged second floor were entirely reconstructed in two phases. Deterioration on the facade was repaired in accordance with the original design, and all window and door frames were replaced with wooden structures, thus maintaining the building’s authentic character.
The ‘Yadigar’ project not only repaired the physical damage but also aimed to revitalize the historical significance of the Balıklı Greek Hospital, ensuring its continued service to the community while honoring its rich past. The successful completion of this project marks a significant achievement in Istanbul’s efforts to preserve its cultural heritage.
