Altındağ Mayor Veysel Tiryaki Slams Union Over 67 Million TL Interest Demand
Ankara, May 10 – Altındağ Mayor Veysel Tiryaki has vehemently criticized the Hizmet-İş Union (affiliated with Hak-İş), announcing that the municipality was compelled to pay an additional 67 million TL in interest on a 34 million TL debt inherited from the previous administration. This payment was made despite the original principal debt, stemming from unpaid personnel salaries between 2019 and 2024, having been fully settled by the current administration.
Mayor Tiryaki: “This is nothing short of usury.”
In a strong statement, Mayor Tiryaki declared, “This situation goes beyond merely demanding interest; it is outright usury.” He expressed profound regret over the payment, emphasizing that the 67 million TL, which is nearly double the original debt, represents the rights of the people of Altındağ and orphans, and has now been transferred to the Hizmet-İş Union’s account.
Tiryaki directly addressed Mahmut Arslan, the General Chairman of the Hizmet-İş Union, and its “usurious union management,” stating, “As Altındağ Municipality and the people of Altındağ, we do not grant our blessings for this money. This situation is nothing short of usury.”
Details of the Financial Dispute
The Mayor clarified that the 34 million TL debt originated from deductions made from personnel salaries during the previous term (2019-2024) that were not transferred to the Hizmet-İş Union. Upon assuming office, his administration fully repaid this principal amount. However, despite the full repayment of the original debt, the Hizmet-İş Union pursued legal action, demanding 67 million TL in interest, and secured a court decision in their favor.
“Even though we paid the principal amount of 34 million TL, it was the Hizmet-İş (Hak-İş) Union that demanded 90 percent interest. The Altındağ Municipality is the one unfairly victimized, forced to pay 67 million TL in interest despite having paid the 34 million TL debt,” Tiryaki asserted.
He concluded his remarks on the matter with a poignant, “My only wish is that it brings them no good.”
Legal Recourse and Future Actions
Despite the payment of the 67 million TL interest, Mayor Tiryaki confirmed that the municipality will continue to pursue all legal rights to defend itself. He reiterated his lifelong commitment to fighting for the welfare of the people and workers of his country, vowing to continue this struggle against those who exploit them.
The Mayor concluded his statement by respectfully bringing the matter to the attention of the public.
This incident highlights a significant financial and ethical dispute between the Altındağ Municipality and the Hizmet-İş Union, drawing public attention to the management of public funds and the responsibilities of union leadership.
