Prof. Dr. Afet İnan, one of the first female history professors in the history of the Turkish Republic, Atatürk’s adopted daughter, and a pioneering figure in the women’s rights movement, will be honored with a special program in Ankara on the anniversary of her passing. The event, organized by the Association for Research and Study of Women’s Social Life (KASAD) and supported by Etimesgut Mayor Erdal Beşikçioğlu, aims to highlight Afet İnan’s scientific contributions, her role in the struggle for women’s rights, and her pioneering place in Republican history.
Special Program and Exhibition for Afet İnan
Titled “Prof. Dr. Afet İnan Commemoration Program & Women in Cartoons from Ottoman to Republic Exhibition,” the event will transcend a mere commemoration, shedding light on the social transformation process of Turkish women. As part of the event, visitors will have the opportunity to explore a special cartoon exhibition focusing on the place of women in society from the Ottoman era to the Republic.
Distinguished Panel Speakers
The program will feature a panel discussion with expert speakers in their fields. Prof. Dr. Ayten Sezer Arığ, Director of Hacettepe University’s Atatürk’s Principles and History of Revolution Institute, Canan Güllü, President of the Federation of Turkish Women’s Associations, and Dr. Canan Aykent, Afet İnan’s granddaughter and an artist, will address the attendees.

Who Was Afet İnan?
Afet İnan was not only one of the first female history professors in the Turkish Republic but also among the founding members of the Turkish Historical Society. As Atatürk’s adopted daughter and one of his closest collaborators, İnan left her mark on Republican history with her role in the struggle for women’s suffrage. For many years, İnan conducted academic research, contributing to the development of a modern understanding of history and participating in the preparation of the first history textbooks of the Republican era.
