Ankara, June 1 – NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska highlighted that the fundamental expectation for the Ankara Summit, set to take place on July 7-8, is the conversion of commitments into tangible actions.
Shekerinska Addresses NATO Parliamentary Assembly
Speaking at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session in Vilnius, Lithuania, Shekerinska reiterated the alliance’s full solidarity with Romania following the drone incident in that country. She noted that allies are well aware of Russia’s capabilities, its willingness to act, and the increasingly reckless nature of its actions.
Shekerinska emphasized that Russia’s reckless behavior poses a threat to everyone, and its attacks on Ukraine directly impact the security of the alliance.
Vigilance Against Russian Threat
“Therefore, our primary duty as NATO is never to let our guard down, especially at a time when we know that the threat Russia poses to our alliance will not disappear even if the war in Ukraine ends. A country that allocates 40 percent of its budget to defense is not interested in peace. A power that wants to maintain the current order does not do this,” Shekerinska assessed.
She also pointed out that, in the broader context, China continues to modernize its armed forces and expand its nuclear capabilities with a lack of transparency. Iran, she added, has long posed a threat with both its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
“The conclusion is clear. In a more dangerous and unstable world, we must invest in our security and strengthen our defense together. And we must do this together,” she stated.
Ankara Summit: Focusing on Concrete Results
Shekerinska underscored that the expectation and message for the Ankara Summit are clear: “We must now turn commitments into action.”
She indicated that the Ankara Summit would focus on converting financial resources into war-ready capabilities, significantly expanding defense industries, and continuing strong support for Ukraine. “The summit’s focus will be entirely on achieving concrete results,” she concluded.
Key Discussion Points for the Summit:
- Transformation of financial resources into war-ready capabilities.
- Significant expansion of defense industries.
- Continued robust support for Ukraine.
The Deputy Secretary General’s remarks come amidst heightened tensions and a shifting global security landscape, emphasizing the urgent need for NATO members to translate their collective defense pledges into operational realities.
